Three Oneida county students garnered top awards at
the 52nd Wisconsin
Land and Water Conservation Association State Poster and
Speaking Contest earlier this month. Grace and Cassandra Hogar, daughters of
Dean and Kecia Hogar, won first place in the elementary and senior divisions
respectively. Seventh grader Ben Metzger, son of Robert and Jean Metzger, won
second place in the junior division at the state competition.
Before going on to state, all three students won
first place in their divisions at the Oneida County and North Central area contests in October. Grace, a
student in Mr. Will Lanford's sixth grade class at Sugar Camp Elementary School, placed first in the Elementary Division at the State
competition with her speech, presented her speech entitled, “The Buffer Zone.”
Ben presented his speech, “White Nose Syndrome!” Ben,
a graduate from Sugar Camp Elementary
School, is a
seventh grader in Ms. Robin LeMoine's class at Three Lakes Junior High School. This is not Ben's first time garnering honors in the
competition. He also swept the first place honors in the county, regional
and state competitions in the Elementary Division in 2008.
Cassandra won her second state competition this
year in the senior division with her speech, “Come to the Dark Side!” Her first
win was in the 2008 competition in the junior division. Cassandra is a ninth
grade student at Three Lakes Senior
High School, and
is also a former student of Sugar Camp Elementary School.
Both Grace and Cassandra have been invited by the Wisconsin
Land and Water Conservation Association to give their speeches
at the 56th Annual
Conference this December in La Crosse.
